Ternate's flood kills dozens
TERNATE, Indonesia—Flash flooding in Indonesia's North Maluku province has killed dozens of people, displaced thousands, and caused widespread damage.
The flood hit the city of Ternate on the island of Maluku on Wednesday, July 27, 2023, after heavy rains caused rivers to overflow their banks.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said that as of Thursday morning, July 28, 2023, at least 35 people had been killed and 12 were missing.
The flood has also displaced more than 4,000 people, who are now staying in evacuation centers.
The BNPB said that the floodwaters had receded in most areas, but some roads and bridges were still impassable.
The flood is the latest in a series of natural disasters to hit Indonesia in recent months.
In January, a volcanic eruption on the island of Java killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more.
In March, a series of earthquakes in West Sumatra killed at least 25 people and injured hundreds more.
Indonesia is located in a seismically active region and is prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and floods.
