Protect Yourself Against Zika Zika Virus: What Travelers Need to Know
Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness that can cause serious birth defects if a pregnant woman is infected. The virus can also cause Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare but serious neurological disorder.
There is currently no vaccine or treatment for Zika virus. The best way to protect yourself is to avoid mosquito bites. Here are some tips:
- Wear long sleeves and pants when you are in areas where mosquitoes are present.
- Use insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or IR3535.
- Sleep under a mosquito net if you are in an area where there are mosquitoes.
- Stay in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.
- If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor about the risks of Zika virus and how to protect yourself.
If you think you may have been infected with Zika virus, see your doctor right away.
