Southwest Jet Engine Explodes Mid-Flight, Killing Passenger

Engine Explosion and Passenger Death

A piece from the damaged Southwest jet was found in Bernville, Pennsylvania, 70 miles outside of Philadelphia. The discovery came after an engine exploded on a Southwest jet en route from New York to Dallas Tuesday, killing a mother of two.

Passenger Partially Sucked Out of Window

The passenger, Jennifer Riordan, was partially sucked out of a shattered plane window following the engine explosion. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Riordan's death marks the first passenger fatality on a U.S. commercial airline since 2009.

Emergency Landing in Philadelphia

The plane, carrying 149 passengers and five crew members, made an emergency landing in Philadelphia shortly after the explosion. The remaining passengers and crew were evacuated safely.

Investigation Underway

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the incident. The NTSB will be looking into the cause of the engine explosion and the plane's maintenance history.
